Illuminating rural Africa and empowering communities with Smart Poles
Smart Poles combine Wi-Fi, solar lighting and government e-services to bridge the digital divide in rural towns. They are already transforming communities in Uganda.

In an era where digital connectivity is a necessity, rural communities are often left behind. Smart Poles have emerged as an ideal way to bridge this divide while transforming lighting infrastructure in remote towns. They act as both digital connectivity hubs and smart lighting, and can become credible centres for government e-services.
Connectivity, education and health
- Connectivity for all: Wi-Fi hotspots act as digital lifelines for disconnected communities.
- Empowering education: schools gain e-learning platforms and digital resources.
- Strengthening healthcare: telemedicine brings consultations and chronic-condition monitoring to remote residents.
Fuelling economic growth
- Local business empowerment: information display boards become advertising space for local businesses.
- Monetisation: Wi-Fi and displays create revenue that can be reinvested in development.
- Sustainable energy: solar panels cut electricity costs and support clean-energy practices.
Catalysts for infrastructure and services
- Enhanced public safety through integrated video surveillance.
- Smart LED lighting with motion sensors for efficient energy use.
- Government e-services such as certificate applications and document submissions.
- Public announcement systems for civic engagement.
- Weather sensors that give farmers real-time data.
With success stories emerging from Uganda, where iSAT Africa has installed Smart Poles, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. As deployment continues across rural Africa, a connected, empowered and sustainable future is within reach.
