01Overview
Smart Poles combine digital connectivity, smart lighting and government e-services to bridge the digital divide and turn rural towns into hubs of digital innovation.
In north-eastern Uganda, iSAT Africa brought mobile internet to communities more than 30km from the nearest tower. We built five mobile network sites with Parallel Wireless (Open RAN 2G/3G) and Camusat (concrete-less passive sites), and installed two smart poles in each town centre with solar streetlights, USB charging and Wi-Fi. With MTN we also trained first-time users in SIM registration, airtime and mobile money.
02What a Smart Pole delivers
Wi-Fi hotspots that act as digital lifelines for disconnected communities.
Schools gain e-learning platforms and digital resources.
Telemedicine consultations and remote monitoring of chronic conditions.
Integrated video surveillance that deters crime.
Efficient LEDs with motion sensors that cut energy use.
Certificates, documents and admin without long journeys.
Public announcement systems that keep citizens informed.
Weather sensors that give farmers real-time data.
“iSAT Africa is proud to have contributed to the improvement of the economic and social life of the inhabitants of the selected rural areas in Uganda. We developed our rural connectivity solution after years of experience with people in Africa, with a vision of connecting the unconnected.”
